A/B Split Testing. A testing method to measure the effectiveness of two versions of an email. One group of recipients is sent version “A”, while a second group is sent version “B”. Effectiveness is usually measured in terms of open rate or click-through rate.
Above the Fold. The area of an email that the recipient can view without scrolling. The most important messaging should appear above the fold.
Click-through Rate. The number of recipients who click on an email link, as compared to the total number of mailings sent. If 200 recipients click through out of a mailing list of 400,000, the click-through rate is 5%. (200 divided by 400,000 multiplied by 100.)
Conversion Rate. The number of recipients who take the desired action on an email, as compared to the total number of mailings sent. For example, if 100 recipients complete a new customer form on the sender’s website, out of a mailing list of 400,000, the conversion rate is 2.5%. (100 divided by 400,000 multiplied by 100.)
List Segmentation. Subdividing a mailing list into smaller components based on demographics, location, product preferences, or other criteria, for the purpose of shaping email content to appeal more strongly to the targeted subgroup(s). Skillful list segmentation often improves click-through and conversion rates.
Open Rate. The percentage of recipients who open the email, as compared to the entire mailing list.
Opt-in Email Marketing, or Permission Based Email Marketing. The practice of sending emails only to recipients who have subscribed or granted permission to the sender.
Subject Line. The content of an email that is viewed in the recipient’s mailbox. Since the subject is the first content element seen by the recipient, it should be carefully crafted to arouse interest. Poorly worded subject lines can weaken an otherwise strong mailing, and trigger SPAM filters as well.
