Hi Bill, Glad to hear you are enjoying the book. "The Gambler" was one of my favorites, too. If you liked that one, you should enjoy most of the rest!

After reading your 8/12 post/review re "the Year's Best Science Fiction ", edited by Gardner Dozios, dropped a hint to the kids on a potential birthday present for me. Daughter Susan came through and I began my reading odyssey the first of the week. When I got to “The Gambler” by Paolo Bacigalupi, lots of bells and whistles went off. I suspect you identify to some degree with Ong and step back a bit at the thought of the malesltrom concept - but that could be where we are headed. More than one Marty Mackley out there.

[...] Note to readers – This post is a real departure, but I’ve been reading The Year’s Best Science Fiction anthology, edited by Gardner Dozois, every year since it first came out in 1984. For the last several years, I’ve reviewed these collections on Amazon, where people seem to find them helpful. Since I’m no longer writing reviews there, I decRead more at http://www.wordsellinc.com/blog/books/the-years-best-science-fiction-twenty-sixth-annual-collection-... [...]

Terry, You are too kind and overestimate my abilities. I've been reviewing books on Amazon for 10 years: a speed reader I am not. However, for a variety of reasons I decided to stop reviewing on Amazon, so some of my literary leanings may intrude into these pages.

My reading interests are broad, but I'm nowhere near your league as a student of literature and the arts. Your blog is incredibly interesting and edifying, and you're the real deal when it comes to expressing the depth and beauty contained in an artistic work.

You've been on a bit of a literary kick lately, what with the Shakespeare SEO and now this post. Coupled with your past activities as an Amazon reviewer (and OMG you must be a speed reader to make the top 500), do I sense a closet literary blogger?

Looks like a great anthology; I'm really going to have to learn to speed read one day.
