My Essential Blog Post of 2009

Posted by:

Joanna Young asks, What is your essential post for 2009? Please consider participating in her group project.

The post I wrote this year that stands out in my mind is The First Online Marketing Question Is, What Are My Keyword Phrases?

Despite the clunky title, I like the post because it -

  • Put forth a sensible and somewhat different strategic approach to and process for content development
  • Explained the connection between blogging and SEO
  • Provided helpful strategic marketing ideas to entrepreneurs and small companies
  • Sparked a bit of disagreement in comments, which is healthy

The post also had some fairly good lines in it, something our friend Joanna is looking for. Here are a few samples.

“You can do SEO after the fact, but it’ll be a clunky vehicle: you can’t change a tractor into a Corvette just by swapping out a few dozen parts.”

“To carry the transportation – SEO analogy a little further, if you add a blog to your website domain, it’ll be like strapping a jet engine to your lawnmower. Harness that blog power with the right content and you can mow down the competition without breaking a sweat.”

Those are definitely catchy phrases. I read the original article when you posted it but somehow missed those phrases in the general onslaught of awesomeness I always find in your posts. Now I think I’ll have these phrases stuck in my brain, a good reason for posts like this one I suppose!

When I’m on top of things I sometimes go back and SEO-tweak past posts which have proven popular. Now I’ll be thinking of your tractor/Corvette analogy each time I do!

  8. Hi Karen, Joanna, Terry – Thank you for your ongoing encouragement. Your enthusiasm inspires me to keep hacking out posts. It gratifies me to know that occasionally a post of mine helps people to do something better.

  9. Hard to pick just one of yours Brad. This is a post I’ve gone back to a few time to try and get my head around the keyword phrase idea. Of course your line reminded me of the Tim Allen episode where they were racing souped up lawn tractors….

  10. Fred, Thank you for the feedback. And BTW, that lawnmower episode is one of the best ever!

“You can do SEO after the fact, but…”

I love it. I sent that along to a client I walked away from about a year ago because they just didn’t get it.

I just added wordsellinc.com to my blog roll to share with my readers. Thanks for being such a consistent great resource!

  13. Hi Kristi, Thanks for the encouragement – hope the quote gets your client thinking differently.

  14. Thanks for this interesting little project, Joanna! A great way to finish up the year!

  24. My best post for 2009: Viewing Life and Society at 75
Birthday boy has some comments about arriving at the big 75 and being happy about the results of the trip here, potholes and all. I’m enjoying my relaxed life and my most valuable assets – my family. A loving wife, two perfect kids and two wonderful grandkids. WOW!

My best for 2060 would surely be: 2059 What a Wonderful Year
So many positive changes have occurred over the past several decades: elimination of poverty, a binding world truce banning all wars, full protection of natural resources, and the popularity of valued living. We live in such a great time; surely this will enter the history books as the era of widespread peace and happiness for all in this world. The little improvements each year have added up to so much, like the recent work week reduction to 20 hours. This has helped in our expansion of the blueberries section of our great garden, and of course more time for hiking, crafting, and other hobbies.
