This is a great story of a truly motivated job seeker and I wish him the best of luck! Finding a job in today's economy is like finding a needle in a haystack and who knows, the right needle just might see Mark's billboard.

Brad, thanks so much for picking up Mark's story. When I read your question "Is it working?" I answered "yes" immediately. Not many job seekers have the guts to put their money into billboard advertising. In doing so, Mark not only created opportunity but demonstrated the very traits that organizations seek in top performers - confidence, innovation, succinct messaging to a targeted audience and more. What a great lesson for anyone in sales. I am rooting for Mark!

Andrew, That's quite a story about Google - never heard it. But it sounds like a perfect technique for a company that strives to be innovative and unconventional.

If I am not mistaken, I think that billboards were actually used by Google as a means of recruitment.

I might be mistaken, but I think I read once that Google used to post complex mathematical problems on billboards on major roads which lead to Silicon valley. Those who were able to solve the problem were invited to contact Google in order to apply for the position.

If a leading employer uses billboards, I see no reason why top-notch candidates like Mark who are seeking employment should not use the same medium.

On the subject of multi-level marketing, I gave Amway a bit of a shot ten years ago. No disrespect to the industry intended (and I do have respect for the more reputable participants in that industry), but with the extent of Mark's qualifications, I would not blame him for feeling that other opportunities are more appropriate for him at this point in time.

Andrews last blog post..Should the illicit drugs industry be legalized?

Hi GL, Robert, I'm all for targeting, but I wonder how many job seekers who take a conventional targeted approach wind up on CNN and ABC. The viral impact of Mark's tactics more than makes up for the small percentage of qualified eyeballs who actually see the billboard. The uniqueness and fun of what he's doing is what appeals to me. If every job seeker had a billboard, it would be like direct mail or a telemarketing call - inefficient and mostly unwelcome.

This is a great idea - if you don't mind waiting for that miniscule percentage of eyeballs that really count! Especially if it's fresh and new, since that's what the news media picked up on. Imagine how ho-hum it woulda been if he'd been the, say 25th guy to do this.

But I agree with GL and give Mark kudos for bein' willin' to think outside the box. Apparently it's bringing in results.

I think, however, if he'd spent more time networking in the right way with the right folks, he might've had similar results with far less cost. But maybe that's just me.

Still, I tip my hat to ya Mark!

Clever guy. Here is a guy who, when confronted with little activity from traditional job searching means, tried to do something different.
Another way might have been to spend as much energy to find openings in companies he had targeted, who have openings. He is paying for a lot of drive bys who have no interest or ability to hire.
But overall..A+ for clevernewss, uniqueness and it sure shows he is willing to go the extra mile.
