Totally agree, Jeanne! The combination of social media game plus marketing opportunity is a winner for those businesses willing to dive in. Speaking of attention, this also presents some public relations opportunities through press releases about the business' Foursquare program. Imagine the coverage that's possible, especially now while we're early in the early stages of this game.

Thanks for taking the time to chime in!

Andrew,

If only it were that easy to get into and hold an office! And for all that “hard work,” yes, I think discounts and freebies are in order.

But I do think that Foursquare did a great thing by calling a venue’s loyal customers by a lauded title instead of “preferred customer” or “rewards member” which smack of “thanks for your cash.”

Thanks for the witty commentary!

Foursquare, and similar location-based apps such as Gowalla, are going to be the marketing of the future. However, I do think they will eventually evolve into something else, something grander and more personalized, or maybe be integrated into other social media powerhouses such as Facebook or Twitter.

Because of its relative simplicity at the moment, it is probably a good time for businesses to experiment with it. Then when it, or its successors, become the way to do business, they will be ahead of their competition.

Again, thank you for inviting me to post on your blog!

Heidi -- Foursquare sounds like a fabulous marketing idea. Taking advantage of the average mobile user's penchant for game-playing is a clever marketing technique that will likely bring a great deal of attention -- not to mention business and profits -- to the company that's willing to try something new.

Heidi, Thanks for the insight. Foursquare looks like a lot of fun. Do you think Foursquare has staying power? Is now the right time for local businesses to jump on the bandwagon?

Heidi,

You get to be a mayor without any of the work or sacrifice involved? Count me in!

Customers may already be 'kings' or 'queens' according to modern business jargon, but I don't think many would mind being a 'mayor' as well, especially if it means that they get special deals.
