We tend to use logic to justify our decisions, but emotion plays an enormous role in the decision itself. I think this is why podcasts and video have become so popular online. Given this, and combined with the fact that pictures in general have a much greater emotional impact than words, not to mention the refreshing degree of simplicity and fun which people often with cartoon related stories, it is no surprise to me to hear that in the right situation, the four panel model to which you refer above could certainly prove to be an effective advertising tool.
