BlogRush to (Bad) Judgment
Along with thousands of other bloggers, I received a cold email from BlogRush the other day informing me that my blog did not measure up to their standards.
Since BlogRush has driven no appreciable traffic my way and has been obviously and publicly in disarray since its inception, I can’t say I was terribly offended or disappointed to get the news. Hey – I’m in sales. When the door gets slammed in my face nine times out of ten, it’s a good day.
What’s interesting is the reason why my blog was bounced – not enough original content.
Hmm. Let’s see … As of this writing, Word Sell has published 262 posts, and unless I’m missing something, all 262 of them are original content. The only conclusion I can draw is that Blogrush’s standard for original content is greater than 100%! Well. That’s a pretty high bar!
Now, I don’t think so, but perhaps BlogRush means “original content” in the sense of fresh and inventive. Determining a degree of originality in that sense is highly subjective, but Straight North has featured original cartoons, life as a building metaphors, business secrets passed down by relatives, and illustrated vocabulary tests.
Brilliant? No. Groundbreaking? Probably not. Original? Absolutely!
Of course, from time to time I am indeed guilty of publishing a thoroughly unimaginative and stale post. For example, take this recent one in which I sung the praises of BlogRush. So let me take my first step toward greater originality by retracting everything I said in the aforementioned post.

Brad, I doubt very much that the quality of your blog is the reason you were bounced. From what I saw when I looked into this – what they’re looking at is whether your readers are clicking your widget links

If they weren’t – maybe because you didn’t have it on the top of your page – or because most blogrush links seemed to be going to some seriously iffy and certainly not-quality-in-any-sense-of-the-word-sites – well that’s the reason you got bounced. I think it says more about the discerning qualities of your readers than your blog!
Good on you for speaking about it so publicly – and calmly. I bet a lot of people are mightily peeved.

Hi Joanna, getting the bum’s rush from BlogRush is not a big concern for me. What’s aggravating is the way they communicate. If there’s a good reason why Word Sell shouldn’t be in the program, fine. Just tell me what it is instead of issuing an irrelevant form letter.
Hi Brad,
Two things for you.
#1 we approved your blog iBlogBusiness today. Thanks for your submission.
#2 We recently launched a newsmastering tool, which allows you to share (and filter) blogs from similar industries to put on your website or subscribe to. Feel free to give it a try:)
