12 Marketing and Writing Book Recommendations

Posted by:

bookshelf spectrum, revisitedImage by chotda via FlickrEven though I’ve been writing reader reviews on Amazon for more nearly 10 years, it wasn’t until last week I learned that each review has a permalink. Duh! Thanks to Joanna Young for cluing me in.

Here’s a rundown of marketing and writing books I read in 2008 and can heartily recommend, along with links to my reviews. (If you like any of my reviews, PLEASE give them a “Yes” vote.) Happy reading!

Bryson’s Dictionary of Troublesome Words, by Bill Bryson. A word and language lover’s delight.

Secrets of Social Media Marketing, by Paul Gillin. The (2008) ABCs of social media marketing.

The Art of the Start, by Guy Kawasaki. THE handbook for startups.

Yes!, by Noah J. Goldstein. Scientific theories of persuasion applied to copywriting.

Tuned In, by Craig Stull, Phil Myers, and David Meerman Scott. How companies become brilliant by tapping the power of social media.

Groundswell, by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff. A high altitude look at social media marketing from two Forrester researchers. Lots of useful stats.

Strategy and the Fat Smoker, by David Maister. How to inspire yourself and build inspired organizations.

Stop the Presses, by Esq. Richard S. Levick. Explores two big challenges of social media – reputation management and crisis litigation. A negative take on bloggers.

Meatball Sundae, by Seth Godin. Change your business to fit the Web instead of jamming your outdated model into a new medium.

Marketing to the Social Web, by Larry Weber. One of my favorites – a high level and trench level exploration of social media marketing and large organizations.

The New Influencers, by Paul Gillin. A primer on business blogging from early 2008 that’s still relevant.

Beyond Bullet Points, by Cliff Atkinson. How to transform PowerPoint presentations from snore to soar.

Have you read any of these? What do you think of them?

  1. Wow! You obviously do a lot of reading, Brad.

That’s some list to have read in twelve short months.

Right now, the one on PowerPoint may be somewhat relevant to me personally. I am only just learning the basics of the program, something I should have done years ago, and my goal by the end of winter is to be at have sufficient mastery to be able to prepare and use it to prepare some straightforward and simple presentations.

Perhaps it would be premature for me to think about going from snore to soar at this point, but I must at least get to ‘snore’ by winter’s end.

The one with the negative take on bloggers sounds interesting as well.

The book which has a negative take on bloggers sounds interesting, and

  2. Hi Andrew, I’ll wager the PP book will help you immensely. Atkinson provides an imaginative and detailed framework you can apply to any type of presentation. “Stop the Presses” is quite close to your blog thematically. It may give you some good ideas for posts.

  3. Brad, I’m really glad I helped you discover those review urls, because now you can share them with a wider world. Your reviews are so clear and easy to read.

I haven’t read any of the books on your list. Meatball Sundae is on my list, and the book you reviewed last week. Well it wasn’t until then, but it is now :-)

  4. Joanna, I would love to get your take on Meatball Sundae. Enjoy them both … when you have time. If you’re like me, you have 10 books or so in queue.

  5. Thanks for the recommendations. Looking forward to reading some of these.

  6. After reading The Expert’s Edge, I now know the holes I need to fill in getting my book written for the audience I believe could benefit the most.
It was hard for me to figure a way to get my customers coming back for more. Ken Lizotte shows you how. It essentially outlines a road map for successfully navigating your way from professional with pearls of wisdom to savvy expert / thought leader .

  10. Hi Brad – I’ve only read 2 of these, so I’ll need to check out some more. Meatball Sundae was one of my favourite books this year – it’s essential reading for folk who want to bring an offline business online.

Art of the Start is great. The only bits I found irrelevant to me, was the stuff about pitching to Venture Capitalists – but you never know, one day I might need that.

  11. Hi Cath, You had the same reaction to Art of the Start – the venture cap stuff is mighty interesting, though. I wonder if some of those techniques can work for any business.

  12. Hi Bradd, Just stumbled upon this and I’m very gald I did. I have read only one of the books on your list, Marketing to the Social web and though it was excellent. Thank you for all the other recommendations, I’m really new to this so I shall get reading! I have just ordered What Would Google Do, do you know it?

  13. Hi McCabe, Hope you find these other books just as good as Weber’s. Funny you mention the Google book. I just heard about it the other day and plan to read it eventually. Thanks for stopping by Word Sell.

  14. Thank you for your recommendation. I’ve read just a single book in your recommendation list: The Art of The Start and found it really “inspiring” and to the point. I should check out the rest of the books on your list to learn more and think more about marketing and deliver value to customers in general!
